COMBINATION SQUARE
A combination square is a versatile tool that combines the functions of several other tools into one, most commonly a try square, a level, and a ruler . It is a multi-purpose measuring and marking tool used in metalworking, woodworking, and stonemasonry.
- Ruler: The ruler is a straight, graduated edge that is used for measuring lengths. Combination square rulers are typically made of steel and can be purchased with gradations in metric, imperial, or both metric and imperial. Both faces of the rule may have markings, providing four different sets of markings. This allows different sides to have different graduations (e.g., 1mm or 0.5mm markings) or units (i.e., metric and imperial). The rule typically comes in lengths between 150mm and 600mm or between 4 inches and 24 inches.
- Square head: The square head is a metal block that slides along the ruler and can be locked in place at any position. The square head is used to check for or create right angles (90 degrees).
- Level vial (optional): Some combination squares also include a level vial, which is a small vial filled with liquid that has a bubble in the center. The bubble is used to check if a surface is level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical).
Here are some of the common uses for a combination square:
- Checking for squareness: The square head can be used to check if two surfaces are perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to each other. This is commonly used in woodworking and metalworking to ensure that joints are square.
- Marking lines: The ruler can be used to mark lines parallel to the edge of a workpiece. The square head can be used to ensure that the lines are square (at a 90-degree angle) to the edge.
- Measuring lengths: The ruler can be used to measure the length of a workpiece.
- Checking for level or plumb: If the combination square has a level vial, it can be used to check if a surface is level (horizontal) or plumb (vertical). This is useful for tasks such as hanging shelves or installing cabinets.
Combination squares are a versatile tool that can be used for a variety of measuring and marking tasks. They are a valuable tool for any woodworker, metalworker, or stonemason.
