Description
PLASTERING TROWEL
A plastering trowel, also sometimes called a finishing trowel, is a hand tool used for applying and smoothing plaster, stucco, or other similar materials on walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.
Like a bricklaying trowel, it typically consists of the following parts:
- Blade: The flat, metal part of the trowel that comes in various shapes and sizes depending on its intended use. Plastering trowels commonly have a rectangular or rounded blade.
- Shank: The thin neck that connects the blade to the handle.
- Handle: The part of the trowel that is gripped by the user.
- Ferrule: The metal ring that connects the shank to the handle, which helps to reinforce the trowel.
Plastering trowels are typically made of high-quality, hardened steel that is resistant to bending or warping. They also come in a variety of sizes, with blade lengths ranging from about 4 inches to over 14 inches. The size you choose will depend on the specific task and the area you’ll be working on.
Here are some factors to consider when choosing a plastering trowel:
- Size: As mentioned earlier, the size of the trowel will depend on the area you’ll be working on. A larger trowel will allow you to cover more area more quickly, but it may be more difficult to maneuver in tight spaces. A smaller trowel will give you more control for detailed work.
- Blade Material: Most plastering trowels are made of steel, but some may be made of stainless steel. Stainless steel trowels are more resistant to rust, but they can also be more expensive.
- Blade Flex: The blade of a plastering trowel can be rigid or flexible. A rigid blade is better for applying and leveling plaster, while a flexible blade is better for smoothing and finishing.
- Handle: The handle of a plastering trowel should be comfortable to grip and easy to hold for long periods of time. Some trowels have soft grip handles for added comfort.
