VERNIER CALIPER(METRIC)
A vernier caliper is a precise instrument used to measure the dimensions of an object. It’s more accurate than a standard ruler and can measure both internal and external dimensions. Here’s a breakdown of its key features and how it works:
Parts of a Vernier Caliper:
- Main scale: This is a fixed graduated scale, typically in centimeters or millimeters.
- Vernier scale: This is a movable scale that slides along the main scale. It has markings that are slightly shorter than the markings on the main scale.
- Jaws: These are the two gripping surfaces used to hold the object being measured. There are two sets of jaws: one for measuring external dimensions (outside diameter of a cylinder) and another for internal dimensions (width of a slot).
- Depth rod: This is a small rod that can be extended from the caliper to measure the depth of an object.
How it Works:
- Align the object with the jaws: For external measurements, place the object between the main jaws. For internal measurements, use the smaller set of jaws.
- Slide the vernier scale until the object is snug between the jaws: You should see a slight drag when you move the jaws.
- Read the main scale: The whole number mark on the main scale that lines up exactly with the jaw edge indicates the closest millimeter or centimeter measurement.
- Read the vernier scale: Look for the line on the vernier scale that aligns perfectly with a line on the main scale. The number next to that line on the vernier scale represents the fractional part of the measurement in millimeters (typically tenths).
Example:
- Let’s say the whole number mark on the main scale that lines up with the jaw edge is 2 cm.
- If the third line on the vernier scale aligns with a line on the main scale, this indicates an additional 0.3 mm (since each small division on the vernier scale is typically 0.1 mm less than the corresponding division on the main scale).
Therefore, the total measurement would be 2.3 cm.
Benefits of Using a Vernier Caliper:
- High precision: Compared to a ruler, a vernier caliper allows for measurements up to a tenth of a millimeter.
- Versatility: It can measure external dimensions, internal dimensions, and depths.
- Relatively easy to use: Once you understand the basic principle, taking measurements with a vernier caliper is straightforward.
Applications:
Vernier calipers are widely used in various fields such as:
- Machining and metalworking for precise part measurements
- Jewelry making for accurate stone sizing
- Woodworking for detailed joint creation
- Science labs for experimental measurements
