Feeler gauges typically come in two different types of sets: metric and imperial. Metric feeler gauges will have measurements in millimeters and centimeters, while imperial feeler gauges will have measurements in inches and thousandths of an inch. When using a feeler gauge, it is important to select the blade that is closest to, but slightly smaller than, the gap you are trying to measure. The blade should slide smoothly into the gap with a slight drag. If the blade goes into the gap too easily, it is too thin. If the blade will not go into the gap at all, it is too thick.
