4. Read the vernier scale: Look for the line on the vernier scale that aligns perfectly with a line on the main scale. The number next to that line on the vernier scale represents the fractional part of the measurement in millimeters (typically tenths).

Example:

• Let’s say the whole number mark on the main scale that lines up with the jaw edge is 2 cm.
• If the third line on the vernier scale aligns with a line on the main scale, this indicates an additional 0.3 mm (since each small division on the vernier scale is typically 0.1 mm less than the corresponding division on the main scale).

Therefore, the total measurement would be 2.3 cm.
